Tristan is a thoughtful and effective trial and appellate counsel with broad litigation experience. While his practice focuses primarily on complex estate and trust disputes, he also routinely acts on administrative and public law matters and in commercial disputes. He has successfully represented clients at all levels of court in British Columbia and appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada.
Tristan’s estates and trusts practice is broad and includes contested applications for validating and propounding wills, incapacity claims, removal of executors, wills variation claims, section 58 claims under BC’s Wills, Estates and Succession Act. Tristan also acts as counsel in committeeship and guardianship applications.
Tristan’s public and administrative law experience is varied and diverse and includes judicial reviews of a variety of administrative actors, representing public bodies at inquires before the Privacy Commissioner, and the enforcement of letters rogatory, among other disputes. He also routinely acts in matters relating to the 2SLGBTQi+ community.
Before joining SMR, Tristan practiced in the Vancouver office of a national law firm and at prominent Western Canadian firms. He holds two law degrees with honours from the University of Ottawa and from Columbia University.
